Romania always evokes images of typical Eastern Europe; dangers, Roms, dark alleys, poor people, grey cities, even more in Transylvania when you add vampires and haunted castles. What I found was quite far from this, secure town, warm, helpful and smiling people, great cultural and musical scene, beautiful castles, ordinary forests and yes some Roms that did not bother me and taxis that tried to charge a little bit too much, no big deal.
Walking around in Brasov is full of surprises, I found one of my favorite British beers (cheaper than in UK), a music festival, a classical concert and what led to that picture on the Main Town Square in front of the Church. Everything was set, the spire, the dramatic clouds and the pigeons. I love having pigeons in flight in my images but sometimes, you know, they are not flying but eating on the floor. That’s not as dramatic in picture though.
That was the problem in that picture and I have to tell you, sometimes you have to cheat a little and be ingenious. When pigeons are eating on the floor you have to take matters in your own hand. Get the camera ready, try to see how you would frame, focus and just take a leap of faith and run, clicking and framing.
So yes, I was running around in a bunch of poor birds trying to eat quietly just because I had a particular picture in my mind. I got it.
Ps. No pigeon was harmed taking this picture.
You liked the story? You like the picture? Good news is that you can buy it as a print online! Not only does it provide you with amazing art to display in your house but it is also the best way to help me continue and improve my work, cheers!
Important things to remember if you do not want to read the whole story even though you should
- Have an idea of the image you want instead of waiting for something to happen
- See how you can have that image
- Do what you need, even if it involves running into pigeons
- Do not be afraid to travel anywhere
- Frame not only to include everything but to give a meaning and a sense of movement
- Do not fear to tilt the image as it can give a sense of dynamism, just don’t overdo it
